HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 c283W
70. Mr. Baldwin

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will take steps to see that either the existing beet sugar factories are enlarged sufficiently to deal with the 1947 stock or erect new factories and avoid the long-distance traffic at present incurred by many growers.

Mr. T. Williams

The question of additional beet sugar factory capacity is at present under consideration in the light of representations from the National Farmers' Union. In any event, it would not he possible to provide additional capacity in time for the 1947 campaign, having regard to other claims on labour and materials required for building and machinery manufacture.
