HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 c292W
108. Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Works why his regional office has refused a permit for a bath to be installed in a house occupied by four farmworkers at East Garston, Berkshire.

Mr. Tomlinson

I assume the Question refers to an application made by Country Life Ltd. in respect of bathroom accommodation at two agricultural cottages at East Garston. The work involved was fairly substantial and after consultation with the local authority, the application was refused in accordance with the general policy that where materials are in short supply they must not be diverted from the construction of new houses however desirable the improvement of existing accommodation may be. Local authorities now deal with all applications for housing work and if the application is renewed to the local authority it will no doubt be considered.
