HC Deb 19 December 1947 vol 445 cc466-7W
Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what recommendations have been made to him by the Highlands Advisory Panel; which of these he has accepted and which rejected; when they will be carried out; and what is the cost of the schemes accepted, rejected and not yet determined.

Mr. Woodburn

The Advisory Panel on the Highlands and Islands was not set up as a Committee to initiate inquiries and to issue reports, but as a body which would be in constant touch with the Departments concerned with administration on the Highlands and Islands, and which would advise me from time to time on the carrying out of concerted plans. The advice which I have received covers a wide and varied field and I am sending the hon. Member a note about action on the more important matters.

Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in how many inhabited places on the sea coast in the Highlands and Islands is there a demand for a pier where none exists and for an improved pier, respectively.

Mr. Woodburn

The county councils' programmes which are before me include 37 applications for grants in respect of piers and slipways. There are also ten places for which new or improved fishery piers or harbours are sought.

Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many inhabited places in the Highlands and Islands have no access by road; and how many of these are on the sea coast and also have no proper facilities for access by sea.

Mr. Woodburn

I regret that the information requested is not available.
