asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what expenditure on health and education services in the New Hebrides has been made since the end of the war by the British authorities and how tills expenditure compares with that of the French authorities and of missions on such services.

Following is the reply:

  1. (a) Expenditure on health in 1946 and 1947.
    • British Authorities—£4,942.
    • French Authorities—£32,860.
    • British Missions approximately—£20,000.
    • French Missions—Nil.
  2. (b) Expenditure on education in 1946 and 1947.
  3. British Authorities—£578.
  4. French Authorities—£6,930.
  5. British Missions approximately—£8,000
  6. French Missions—No figures available but only 2 mixed Primary Schools are concerned.
