§ 140. Mr. Lowasked the Secretary of State for Air, as representing the Secretary of State for Burma, whether he will now make a statement as to the outcome of the representations which he undertook to make to the Government of Burma regarding improvements in the terms to be granted to European servants of the Government of Burma, other than members of the Secretary of State's Services, on the transfer of power in Burma.
§ Mr. A. HendersonI am glad to be able to inform the House that, as announced by my noble Friend the Secretary of State for Burma, in the Debates on the Burma Independence Bill in another place, the Government of Burma have agreed, in the light of the views expressed in Parliament, to calculate the proportionate pensions which they are granting on a more liberal basis. They will also give members of the Class I Services a resettlement grant of £500. They will provide in addition for those officers passages on the scale provided for the Secretary of State's Services under the298W Premature Retirement Rules, the effect of which, for all except those entitled to maximum pension, is free passages from their stations in Burma to their destinations in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the British Commonwealth for officers, their wives and their dependent children.
