HC Deb 15 December 1947 vol 445 c301W
Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of police recruits normally on duty at dangerous street crossings and at school crossings in the L.C.C. area; and whether there are sufficient police officers available for such duties.

Mr. Ede

Though suitable probationary constables are employed on this duty in varying numbers from day to day no man is employed on it during his initial three months' recruits training. Every effort is made to post police at dangerous street and school traffic crossings but owing to the present shortage of police it is impossible to provide complete cover on every occasion.
