HC Deb 15 December 1947 vol 445 cc269-70W
27. Mr. A. Edward Davies

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the exorbitant price being charged for apples; and whether he will control the prices at reasonable levels.

Mr. Strachey

My latest information, which is for the week ended 6th December, shows that the average retail price in England and Wales for the whole range of eating apples was 1s. 3d. per lb. and for cooking apples, 8d. per lb. Certain better quality varieties and grades are fetching higher prices, but the average prices are not greatly in excess of the former maximum retail control price which was 1s. 1d. for the best eating apples and 8½d. for the best cooking apples.
