HC Deb 11 December 1947 vol 445 cc247-8W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has considered the correspondence which has been sent him concerning petrol rationing in the Channel Islands; and in view of the further evidence therein contained, if he will reconsider the whole matter and make a statement.

Mr. Ede

The reasons for asking the Channel Islands to adopt a petrol rationing scheme similar to our own, was to save dollars by cutting out all unessential motoring. This was fully explained in a Home Office letter of 6th November last which was published in the Islands and of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy. I have considered the correspondence which the hon. Member sent me, and I see nothing in it to cause me to add anything to the Home Office letter.
