HC Deb 11 December 1947 vol 445 c244W
107. Mr. Pryde

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the amount of the increase in the cost of administration in the mining industry since the National Coal Board assumed control.

Mr. Robens

An exact comparison between the costs of administration in the mining industry before and after the National Coal Board assumed control is not available. But the Chairman of the National Coal Board in a public statement recently indicated that the total additional cost involved in the payment of wages and salaries to managerial, technical and clerical staff employed involved an increase of the order of 1d. per ton. This covers additional work on reorganisation, research, training and welfare.
