HC Deb 04 December 1947 vol 445 c83W
13. Mr. Cooper-Key

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that the practice of sounding air-raid sirens as a fire warning has caused distress to the public, particularly those living in areas known during the war as front line towns; and whether an alternative warning method will be devised before next summer.

Mr. Ede

The answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes," and it is a matter of much regret to me that the results of all our research still give no hope of finding a satisfactory substitute.
