HC Deb 04 August 1947 vol 441 cc107-8W
Brigadier Rayner

asked the Minister of Supply how many persons are employed centrally and regionally in the operation of each individual raw material control of his Department; what is the total annual payroll in each case; and what proportion this bears to the cash value of the material controlled.

Mr. Wilmot

The information is as follows:

Material. Number of Staff. Cost of Staff. Percentage of cost of staff to cash value of material sold.
£
Chrome Ore 6 3,000 .44
Copper, Tin, Lead, Zinc. 181 85,000 .12
Aluminium 21 10,200 .11

The Iron and Steel Board are responsible for the general supervision of iron and steel production, but apart from importing semi-finished steel supplies through an agent, they do not buy or sell steel. It is therefore not possible in their case to relate the cost of staff to the value of materials falling within the Board's sphere.
