HC Deb 21 April 1947 vol 436 c62W
51. Mr. Joynson-Hicks

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that during March growers received prices around 2d. each, less selling charges, for best home-grown lettuces; and if that price covers the costs of production as ascertained for the last annual review for agricultural prices.

Mr. T. Williams

According to market reports, the prices of home-grown lettuce in the London markets during March ranged from 2s. to 14s. per dozen, with an average price of 9s. per dozen. Costs of production of lettuce vary considerably, but I have no reason to think that the March prices were unremunerative. Lettuce in common with other vegetables is outside the scope of the price review procedure.
