HC Deb 21 April 1947 vol 436 c69W
Lieut.-Colonel Elliot

asked the Minister of Food what is the calorie intake per head of the population for the latest month for which a dieting survey is available; and what are the figures for the nearest corresponding date a year ago.

Mr. Strachey

The latest figure we have is for December last. As I explained to the right hon. and gallant Member in reply to his Question on 24th March, it is based on a small but representative sample of working class families and covers only food eaten in the home, and not school, or any other meals taken out of the home. The figure is 2,300 calories, which compares with an average of 2,390 in December, 1945.
