HC Deb 21 April 1947 vol 436 c68W
88. Sir J. Mellor

asked the Minister of Food how many avocado pears have been imported in 1947; at what cost in foreign currencies and sterling, respectively; and what was the average price to the consumer.

Dr. Summerskill

Avocado pears are not identifiable as a separate item in official imports statistics. The best information I can get indicates that the quantity imported this year is something less than two tons, of which over two-thirds came from the British West Indies. The balance came from the U.S.A. The total value of these imports was under £400. Prices of Avocado pears are not controlled here but I understand that they have been on sale to the public at prices from 4s. 6d. to 6s. each
