HC Deb 17 April 1947 vol 436 c33W
47. Mr. Renton

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that Mr. Albert Jones, of Ramsey St. Mary's, Huntingdonshire, was, as a ballotee for the mines, sent to Rossington Colliery, Don-caster, in August, 1944, to receive training as a miner and remained there until September, 1946, when it was discovered that he was not a member of a trade union; that thereafter, though he reported daily, he drew no pay and was told his services were not required; that Mr. Jones has recently received instructions to report again for duty at that colliery although he is now becoming a skilled plumber; and whether he will relieve Mr. Jones of this obligation.

Mr. Isaacs

As soon as my inquiries are completed I will write fully to the hon. Member. I have, however, been able to ascertain that on 18th November, 1946, the colliers at Rossington Colliery indicated that they would refuse to work with Mr. Jones as he was not a member of the National Union of Mineworkers. The colliery management terminated his engagement on 23rd November, 1946.
