HC Deb 02 April 1947 vol 435 c321W
91. Mr. King

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many persons directly or indirectly employed by his Department refused to return to the Gold Coast to give evidence to the Commission of Inquiry which reported on charges of corruption and inefficiency in the Supplies and Customs Department in that Colony; if any of these persons are still in receipt of salaries or pensions from his Department; and if any pressure was brought to bear on them by his Department.

Mr. Creech Jones

One officer employed by the Gold Coast Government declined to return to the Gold Coast to give evidence to this commission of inquiry. This officer is at present in receipt neither of a salary nor of a pension from the Gold Coast Government. It was pointed out to him by my Department that the commission considered it most necessary to hear his evidence and a return air passage was offered to him from Gold Coast Government funds.
