HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 c94W
61. Sir P. Macdonald

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the difficulties tomato growers in the Isle of Wight are experiencing in selling their tomatoes; and what steps he proposes to take to see that this crop is not wasted.

Mr. Strachey

Unfavourable weather delayed the ripening of outdoor tomatoes and affected their quality. Substantial quantities were found to be unfit for long-distance travel with the result that some markets, particularly in the South, became temporarily overloaded. Arrangements have been made, in suitable cases, for surplus supplies to be processed and individual growers who have difficulty in disposing of their produce should seek the assistance of the local Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Area Officer.
