HC Deb 29 October 1946 vol 428 cc83-4W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for Air how many Poles joined the R.A.F. during the war; and how many of these obtained British decorations for distinguished service.

Mr. de Freitas

Approximately 2,000 Poles joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve between September, 1939, and August, 1940, and during that period two of them received British awards for gallantry and distinguished service. On 5th August, 1940, the Poles were withdrawn from the R.A.F.V.R. and formed the nucleus of the Polish Air Force serving under R.A.F. Command. It would be contrary to the practice of His Majesty's Government to state the number of British decorations awarded to members of an Allied Force.
