§ 73. Mr. P. Thorneycroftasked the Minister of Transport if he will give details of refrigerator trains used at present on British railways; and, in particular, state whether ice and salt are still used for the refrigeration of fish, involving carrying roughly one ton of ice and salt for every ton of fish.
§ Mr. BarnesThere are no refrigerator trains used at present on British railways. Insulated vans are used for the carriage of fish. For conveyance by rail it is the practice of the trade to pack fish in wet ice which represents about 20 per cent. of the total weight of the package.
