HC Deb 21 October 1946 vol 427 cc307-8W
Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the com- position of Provincial Advisory Councils in Tanganyika; and how the representatives of the different races and interests in Tanganyika are selected.

Mr. Creech Jones

No Provincial Advisory Councils have yet been set up in Tanganyika but the establishment of such Councils in certain provinces is at present under consideration. No decision has yet been reached as to the composition of the Councils but it is proposed that, in addition to official members, they should include unofficial members drawn from the different racial communities, who at first would be appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Provincial Commissioner concerned given after consultation with the Native Administrations and representative bodies of the different communities.
