§ 105. Mr. H. Hyndasked the Minister of National Insurance whether Members of Parliament are regarded as employed persons or as self-employed persons for the purposes of the National Insurance Act, 1946.
§ Mr. J. GriffithsA formal ruling on this matter can only be given subject to appeal to the High Court. I am, however, advised that Members of this House, are gainfully occupied persons within the meaning of the National Insurance Act, 1946, but are not employed under a contract of service. Subject to any regulations that may be made as to the classification of insured persons, Members of this House will accordingly, in the absence of other employment affecting their status, be insurable as self-employed persons.
