§ Mr. IsaacsDuring the six months ended 16th September, 1946, 64,640 persons, including those in employment and seeking other posts, applied to the Appointments Department; the number of persons registered as unemployed fell from 23,013 to 20,878; 24,310 vacancies were notified, of which 12,580 were filled The final selection rests, of course, with the employer concerned. A larger number and a wider variety of vacancies would materially assist.
