§ 84. Mr. Teelingasked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster why Yugoslav ex-prisoners of war in the British zone in Germany, who have been admitted to police duties in the zone, are being paid in German money instead of in B.A.F.S.A.; and whether he is aware that this prevents their purchase of supplies from the N.A.A.F.I. and cuts them off from cigarettes, soap, toothpaste and mending material.
§ Mr. J. HyndIn order to restrict our sterling expenditure to a minimum wages and salaries of personnel engaged locally in Germany are normally paid in German marks. I am, however, already considering a partial relaxation of this rule in the case of Yugoslav ex-prisoners of war employed on police duties. Meanwhile they are receiving free N.A.A.F.I. rations of commodities such as cigarettes and soap.
