HL Deb 20 November 1946 vol 144 cc277-8WA
THE EARL OF MANSFIELD

asked His Majesty's Government whether they are aware of the distorted and inaccurate descriptions of conditions in this country, broadcast almost daily to the peoples of the U.S.S.R. from official Russian stations; and whether they will arrange for at least weekly broadcasts in the Russian language, on wavelengths likely to reach a considerable proportion of the Russian population, giving on the one hand true information on social, political, and economic conditions here, from a non-party angle, and on the other, the British point of view on current questions on which there is international disagreement.

LORD CHORLEY

The information is set out in the table below. All the figures are average numbers for the month of October, 1946:

VISCOUNT ADDISON

The British Broadcasting Corporation is already broadcasting three times a day in the Russian language on wave-lengths which can be heard over a considerable proportion of Soviet territory, including the whole of European Russia; these broadcasts are designed to give unbiased information on social, political and economic conditions in this country, and, although care is taken to avoid polemics, the broadcasts normally reproduce all important official statements on the British point of view on current questions on which there is international disagreement.

House adjourned at two minutes past six o'clock.
