§ Mr. BellengerFor the year ended 31st August, 1946, the proportion of semi-illiterates retained in the Army was about 22 per cent. of the intakes. The corresponding figure for illiterates was about 0.4 per cent. No records are maintained of those not retained in the Army. I regret that no comparable data are available for pre-war years when a different system of classification was used.
