HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 cc270-1W
101. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement as at the latest convenient date of the working programme under the direction of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad; if the staff of the college is now adequate; and what is the number of students under instruction.

Mr. Creech Jones

The college programme comprises the post-graduate training of Colonial agricultural scholars, the training of others who are undertaking professional posts in tropical agriculture and sugar technology and the provision of refresher courses for the Colonial Agricultural Service. Such training is carried on in association with research engaged in by the college. The governing body have recently made an appointment to the vacant post of principal, and with the filling of that and other vacancies, including three posts recently added to the Agricultural Department, I understand that the staff may be considered adequate. Forty-eight students were under instruction on 31st December, 1945.

I may add that I am in consultation with the governing body as to the steps to be taken to ensure that the college is able to continue to fulfil the essential role it has to play in the development of agriculture in the Colonial Empire.
