HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 cc302-3W
Mr. J. McKay

asked the Secretary of State for War what was the total number of Poles in the Army actually fighting plus the number in training when the war ended; how many of the Poles who were conscripted by the Germans deserted during operations and voluntarily joined our forces to fight against the Germans; how many Poles were wounded and killed on the battle fronts of Europe; how many Poles are there in this country now who were conscripted by the Germans; and were these in training to fight in Europe or elsewhere with the British Army.

Mr. Bellenger

One hundred and thirty-six thousand Poles were fighting with the British forces and 36,000 were under training when hostilities ended. About 100,000 who were conscripted by the Germans deserted to or were captured by us, but I have not, in the time available, been able to divide the figure. About 4,800 Poles were killed with the British forces and 17,700 wounded on the battlefronts of Europe. There are about 39,000 now in this country who were conscripted by the Germans. Of these 18,000 fought for us and the remainder were under training at the end of hostilities.
