HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 cc261-2W
Mr. Nally

asked the President of the Board of Trade at what date his Department were asked to issue a licence for the manufacture of 10,000 desks needed by a football pool organisation, whose name has been supplied to him; whether such licence was wholly or partially granted; and what amount of plywood and softwood was involved.

Mr. Belcher

No request for the issue of a licence for the manufacture of 10,000 desks for the football pool organisation, to which, I think, my hon. Friend refers, can be traced, but about two standards of softwood, 2,400 cubic feet of recovered hardwood and 21,000 square feet of plywood have been licensed during the current year to manufacturers to enable them to fulfil orders by the organisation for 3,900 desks.

Mr. Nally

asked the President of the Board of Trade the number of licences granted to manufacturers by his Department in the last six months for the production of office furniture and equipment ordered by football pools organisations; and the amounts of plywood, softwood and metal to be used in fulfilling such permitted production.

Mr. Belcher

So far as I have been able to ascertain, six licences were granted to manufacturers by my Department in the last six months for timber for the production of office furniture and equipment ordered by football pool organisations, involving the release of about 23,100 square feet of plywood, 2,470 cubic feet of hardwood, mostly recovered timber, and three standards of softwood. In the case of metal, I have no information as to the identity of the ultimate purchaser of the furniture produced.
