97. Vice-Admiral Taylorasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will indicate the nature of the developments which are taking place in the Island of Montserrat, in view of the increased grant-in-aid of administrative expenses in that island.
Mr. Creech JonesThe grant-in-aid is intended to cover not new development, but ordinary expenses of administration which the Presidency's own revenue is insufficient to meet. The main cause of the increased grant-in-aid for 1946 is the need to repair damage caused by heavy storms. Development schemes assisted by grants under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act are being made in Montserrat covering agricultural and public health development, road reconstruction, land settlement and erection of school buildings and teachers' houses.
