HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 c278W
Viscount Corvedale

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will give some information about the events which took place in Gordon College, Khartoum, on Wednesday, 30th October.

Mr. Mayhew

The Governor-General of the Sudan has been good enough to furnish me with the following information: Political activity by the students' union of the college had been stimulated by recent events. The college rules forbid extra-mural politics, and when, after repeated warnings and a threatened demonstration by the students on October 29th, they absented themselves from lectures on the 30th, the college authorities decided that existing excitement made normal study impossible and closed the college, which was in any case to adjourn the next day for Bairam. The question of the date and conditions of reopening is under consideration by the college authorities.
