HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 c237W
137. Mr. McEntee

asked the Minister of Transport if, in view of the shortage of suitable ships for importing timber, he has considered the desirability of importing it by timber rafts, as was done after the first world war.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

The possibility of importing timber into this country by the use of timber rafts has been considered from time to time during the war in conjunction with the Timber Control, but has been found to be impracticable, mainly because of the great risk of the rafts breaking up at sea, with the consequent danger to navigation.
