HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 c240W
Sir G. Fox

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that, when shipping was specially called to load sisal in Dar-es-Salaam, the vessels were delayed after arrival for some days owing to the inability of the Tanganyika railways to transport the sisal from up-country; what was the cost of this delay and what steps will be taken to avoid delay in the future.

Mr. Creech Jones

My information is that no ships have been especially called to Dar-es-Salaam for the loading of sisal and that on no occasion has the loading of any ship been delayed owing to the inability of the railway to transport sisal from up-country. The shipping of sisal proceedspari passu with production and the requirements of the Board of Trade, and there has been no unmanageable accumulation of stocks.
