HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 c224W
118. Lieut.-Commander Joynson-Hicks

asked the Secretary of State for War why the standard rate of deduction of Income Tax from the pay of a sergeant at 11s. per day is 8d. per day and from the pay of an officer at 11s. per day is only 11s. per month.

Mr. Bellenger

The difference is accounted for by the fact that the officer is entitled to a deduction of £25 from his taxable income for upkeep of military uniform, whereas the sergeant, having his uniform maintained free is not entitled to this deduction.
