HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 c170W
75. Mr. Nicholson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India to what extent British service troops are being employed in the maintenance of law and order in Bengal and Bihar.

Mr. A. Henderson

In Bengal four battalions of British infantry, one regiment (less one squadron) Royal Armoured Corps and one Field Regiment Royal Artillery are being used for the maintenance of law and order. These are nearly all stationed in Calcutta; British troops are not at present being employed in the interior of Eastern Bengal. In Bihar one company of British infantry and one squadron Royal Armoured Corps are being used for this purpose. To the above must be added, in each Province, small numbers of miscellaneous supporting troops.
