HC Deb 31 May 1946 vol 423 cc240-1W
Lieut.-Colonel Blyers

asked the Lord President of the Council what amount of money is being devoted by the Government to cancer research during the next 12 months; and whether he is satisfied that this is adequate to ensure that such research is in no way handicapped for lack of finance.

Mr. H. Morrison

The amount already allocated to cancer research out of the grant-in-aid to the Medical Research Council for 1946–47 is £7,600. It is not possible to forecast what additional expenditure on the subject will be incurred during the year, but I can assure the hon. and gallant Member that no promising research proposal will be declined owing to lack of funds. This allocation of public money is, of course, supplementary to the substantial expenditure from the endowments and other resources of unofficial bodies and institutes existing specially for the purpose of research into cancer.
