§ 109. Mr. K. Lindsayasked the Minister of Education to what extent the average size of classes in primary and secondary modern schools is declining.
§ Mr. HardmanI regret that I can give no recent figures of the size of classes because it will be some time before the statistics obtained from the schools earlier in this year can be tabulated. It can, however, be assumed that the number of over-large classes is declining since between October and April last the number of teachers has increased from 173,500 to 180,000 and I have no reason to suppose that there has been a corresponding increase in the number of children.
