HC Deb 21 May 1946 vol 423 c47W
94. Mr. Goronwy Roberts

asked the Minister of Works if he has any statement to make about the future of the slate industry; and, particularly, the setting up of a working party for the industry.

Mr. Tomlinson

Yes, Sir; I am appointing a committee on the Welsh slate industry with the following terms of reference:

To consider and report upon the organisation of the Welsh slate industry and upon measures for increasing its efficiency and making it attractive to recruits, excluding wages and conditions of employment falling Within the negotiating machinery of the industry."

The committee will consist of Sir Frederick Rees as independent chairman, together with representatives of employers and operatives, a member of the Building Research Station, an engineer and a geologist. I hope that the arrangements for the committee will be completed shortly and that it will be able to begin its work in the very near future.
