HC Deb 21 May 1946 vol 423 cc67-8W
140. Mr. John Henderson

asked the President of the Board of Trade, in view of the fact that the official returns show that there are 74,415 unemployed in Scotland at 8th April, an increase including 7,167 ex-Service personnel who have had no employment since leaving the Forces, what steps he is taking to arrest this state of affairs.

Mr. Belcher

The Board of Trade and the other Departments concerned, in consultation with the Secretary of State for Scotland, are taking all possible steps to reduce unemployment in Scotland as quickly as possible. For details of steps which have already been taken, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for South Edinburgh (Sir W. Darling) on 13th May.
