HC Deb 16 May 1946 vol 422 cc269-70W
47. Mr. Haworth

asked the Prime Minister whether the same grants can be given to civilians who are awarded the George Medal as are awarded to Service recipients of the D.S.M., D.C.M., M.M. and D.F.M.; and whether the additional 6d. a day to pensions can be awarded to Government civilian employees as awarded to Service pensioners.

The Prime Minister:

No, Sir. Although some military awards are accompanied by pecuniary grants, it is not proposed to extend the system to the George Medal. Generally speaking it is the awards themselves which are the real medium of State recognition for bravery, and they should be regarded in that light.
