§ Colonel Stoddart-Scottasked the Minister of Health if he is aware that the Leeds City Watch Committee have declined to grant permission for an increase of taxicab fares on Class A vehicles and have suggested a 20 per cent. reduction, whilst on Class B vehicles they have suggested a 25 per cent. increase; that Leeds taxicab proprietors have not had an increase in their fares since 1940, in spite of increase in cost, maintenance, rent and wages; and if he will recommend that the Leeds City Watch Committee reconsider and amend their decisions.
§ Mr. Bevan:I am aware that the City Council of Leeds, who are the responsible authority for fixing hackney carriage fares in the city, have not altered their table of fares since 1940. My function in the matter is, however, merely that of confirming authority for proposals put forward by the city council. If any such proposals are made I have to consider them and also any objections to them; it would not, therefore, be appropriate for me to express in advance an opinion upon the matter. I am prepared to consider proposals from the council, if made, and the hon. and gallant Member's Question will have the effect of calling attention to the present position.
