HC Deb 15 May 1946 vol 422 cc242-3W
116 Mr. G. Thomas

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what steps are being taken to bring the release of naval schoolmasters more in line with the general rate of release in the R.N.

Mr. Dugdale:

Three methods have been, or will be, used:

First, fresh recruiting either by promotion of "hostilities only" ratings or by entries from civil life. In the year since V.E. Day, 70 officers have been entered in this way, which represent 16 per cent. of the number of "hostilities only" schoolmasters employed on V.E. Day. Plans to attract schoolmasters to come into the Navy for short service are included in the new conditions of service for the branch now under consideration.

Second, by employing suitably qualified officers of other branches on full time educational work in connection with the Educational and Vocational Training Scheme.

Third, an Admiralty Fleet Order will be issued shortly inviting those serving for "hostilities only" to transfer to the permanent list.
