HC Deb 14 May 1946 vol 422 c185W
118. Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether, to counteract the sale and exchange of forged petrol coupons, he will make it a condition of sale of petrol that motorcar log books must be produced together with petrol coupons so that the dealer may check serial numbers of petrol coupons issued.

Mr. Shinwell:

The only forgeries at present in circulation are those of the basic ration coupons and the number is relatively insignificant. I am obliged to my hon. Friend for his suggestion but it would not be practicable to require the production of the registration book as a condition of the sale of petrol. The easiest way for the dealer to protect himself against the risk of accepting a forged basic ration coupon is to comply with the legal requirement to detach the coupon from the ration book at the time the petrol is supplied and to see that the registration number of the car corresponds with that shown on the cover of the book.
