HC Deb 13 May 1946 vol 422 c135W
35. Lieut.-Colonel Price-White

asked the Minister of Transport whether the projected schemes for new main arterial roads will provide for a direct and new road linking North and South Wales; and if, in view of the necessity for improving the existing communications between North and South Wales, he will include such road within the national scheme in accordance with plans therefor already prepared and approved of by many county authorities in Wales.

Mr. Barnes:

The answer to the first part of the Question is "No, Sir." With regard to the second part, while I am anxious to improve communications between North and South Wales and also roads which can serve tourist traffic, I do not think we should be making the best use of our resources by constructing at this stage a new arterial road on the lines suggested. Such a road would have to traverse mountainous country, and would be both difficult and extremely expensive to construct.
