HC Deb 13 May 1946 vol 422 cc159-61W
Mrs. Middleton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what royalties were paid to British companies in respect of tin mines in Nigeria in 1945; and whether he will take steps to secure that these payments are retained in Nigeria for the benefit of the local population.

Mr. George Hall:

Separate figures for tin are not readily available but the estimated amount paid in 1945 in respect of the half share of royalties due to the successors of the Royal Niger Company is £168,400. These payments were unconditionally guaranteed as from 1st January, 1900, by the British Government of the day to the Company for a period of 99 years under the agreement compensating them for the surrender of their rights. That agreement is still in force. The problem of these arrangements is engaging my attention.
