HC Deb 13 May 1946 vol 422 c158W
Colonel Ponsonby

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the skilled Italian artisans, now usefully employed in East Africa, are to be repatriated in spite of the anxiety of many of them to remain in the country and of their employers to retain their services.

Mr. George Hall:

The question whether a certain number of Italian prisoners of war and civilians evacuated from Italian. East Africa during the war and now in essential employment in the British East African territories can be allowed temporarily to remain in these territories, if the Governments concerned so desire, is at present under consideration. In the meantime individual cases of such persons wishing to remain in East Africa will be considered in the light of the interests of the territory concerned.
