HC Deb 08 May 1946 vol 422 c90W
49. Mr. Martin

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many German and Austrian refugees in this country have applied for repatriation since the cessation of hostilities; how many have so far been repatriated and for what main classes of employment they went; and if he will give an indication of the position or services they have occupied or rendered in the respective zones of the Allied occupation.

Mr. J. Hynd:

Many thousands have applied in various ways but only 197 written applications have been received in the Control Office. Thirty-six have been repatriated who were urgently required for reconstruction tasks; 17 politicians, II civil servants, five trade union leaders, two journalists, and one judge. In the time available I have not been able to ascertain what service they have rendered since their return.
