72. Major Leǵǵe-Bourkeasked the Minister of Food what orders are in force regarding the removal of rib, bone and flap from fish supplied by coastal merchants to inland purveyors; and if he is satisfied that these orders are being fully complied with.
Sir B. Smith: The Fish (Control and Maximum Prices) Order, 1946, provides that, when fish is sold as fillets, the bones and the greater part of the flap, as well as certain other parts of the fish, must be removed. In the case of flat fish the flap need not be removed. I have had complaints that the Regulation is not fully observed, but proceedings are taken wherever satisfactory evidence is forthcoming.
73. Lieut.-Commander Clark Hutchisonasked the Minister of Food if he is aware that the fixed retail price of Is. 5½ per lb. for haddock filleted by the Scottish method is considered to be quite inadequate by Scottish fishmongers; and whether he will review this matter.
Sir B. Smith: I am aware of the complaint of the Scottish fishmongers, and am considering ways of overcoming the difficulty.
