§ 87. Mr. O'Brienasked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that women show repugnance to wearing stockings which are not fully fashioned; and if he will give an assurance that, in future, enough fully-fashioned women's stockings will be made from nylon and other materials to supply the demand.
§ Mr. Belcher:I am aware that many women have a very high regard for fully fashioned stockings; but I am afraid I cannot promise production on the scale suggested by my hon. Friend, which would be vastly in excess of prewar. In 1938, about 2½ pairs of seamless stockings were sold in this country for every pair of fully fashioned; and approximately half those fully fashioned were imported.
