HC Deb 06 May 1946 vol 422 c47W
83. Mr. W. J. Brown

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, whet he is able to release further supplies of newsprint to newspapers, he will ensure that an equivalent increase is given to new papers which come under Control Order 7o.

Mr. Belcher:

I cannot yet say when it will be possible to make further supplies of newsprint available, and I cannot, of course, prejudice what arrangements may be possible when the supply position is easier. But, as I informed the hon. Member on 18th April, the relaxation allowing small new newspapers and periodicals to be published was intended primarily for publications not of a commercial nature, and the quantity was fixed at a figure which was felt to be sufficient to meet the essential need in the conditions of severe restriction which must continue for sometime.

91. Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the impossibility of ex-Servicemen and women being registered with local newsagents for daily newspapers, as lists are already full, he will consider increasing the supply of paper to newspaper offices so that returning Service personnel can benefit.

Mr. Belcher:

As stated by the Prime Minister on 10th April, the question whether we can afford some additional imports of newsprint is being kept under review.
