HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 c417W
106. Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that unexploded trench mortar shells are still present in Stoke Edith Park, Herefordshire, despite the fact that the land was certified by his Department as clear in January, when DR 52 notices were withdrawn; and whether he will order a fresh search to be made as quickly as possible by the military authority concerned.

Mr. Bellenger

It is not possible to guarantee complete clearance of land of unexploded missiles, and the owners or occupiers are informed of this fact when their land is returned to them. They are also warned that particular care should be taken not to disturb and suspected objects which may be found, and that the police should be informed so that arrangements can be made for their removal.

The fact that Defence Regulation 52 notices have been withdrawn in this case indicates that the owner or occupier accepted the return of the land knowing that the area had been searched as thoroughly as possible, but that it could not be guaranteed entirely clear of unexploded missiles. I do not consider that there is any necessity for a fresh search to be carried out, but arrangements will be made to remove any unexploded shells which are reported to the police.
